Sam Houston State University
Chemistry and Forensic Sciences Building
Challenge
Desperately in need of additional space, the Chemistry and Forensic Sciences departments originally planned a 40,000 square-foot addition to a current building. WHR aided the university in determining that this was not the ideal approach due to the constricted and complicated nature of the site. An alternative was needed.
Solution
WHR conceived a new 61,000 square-foot building to accommodate current and future needs. The design includes classrooms that are shared between the two departments, as well as laboratories for teaching and research, and offices.
Results
A modular lab approach allows for easy reconfiguration, making the building readily flexible for future initiatives. The design also utilizes a central staired atrium to facilitate easy interaction, and Clerestory windows to allow invigorating natural light to penetrate the entire building.
