The Kirby Breast Imaging Center is a 7,200 square foot outpatient imaging center designed to provide patients with the resources needed for breast wellness and the detection and treatment of breast cancer. Located in a retail center setting, this is the first of several planned “neighborhood” satellite imaging centers which will bring patient services closer to the patients.
The client desired the facility to exhibit the meditative characteristics of a spa while boasting the latest imaging technology.
WHR’s design team was able to address these wishes without sacrificing security and privacy issues, functionality, sustainability, or energy conservation. The facility houses mammography, stereostatic mammography, 1.5T stereostatic MRI, and ultrasound equipment.
Cognizance of the needs of the breast cancer patient was critical to the design of the center. WHR focused on creating a low-stress, safe and secure, yet comfortable environment which helped make treatment a more therapeutic experience.
Natural daylight shines through much of the building, providing natural illumination for visitors. Film used on the glass helps reduce heat gain, minimizes glare, and assists in providing privacy for the patients. LED cove lighting and low-wattage lamping were used to reach the energy code. Indoor air quality was enhanced by using many sustainable products. Low VOC paints and adhesives, PVC-free wall protection, and rubber flooring create a healthful environment. Renewable materials such as bamboo veneer ceilings, recycled content carpet and fabrics, and resin panels continued the holistic healing feel of the space.
Privacy for the patients was also a major factor during the planning process. To control access, a closed vestibule was designed at the entrance, but welcoming, comfortable materials were also utilized in this space.
The MRI Suite consists of an interview room, a robed waiting area, a toilet, MRI equipment, and a climate-controlled MRI room. The MRI Suite is adjacent to the public waiting area so that patients receiving MRIs can be routed directly to the MRI imaging area without passing through other areas, promoting privacy for all patients. The interview room is located at the front of the building, close to the waiting area so that it can be accessed without crossing into the secured MRI suite. Carrying the spa-like atmosphere throughout the facility, the MRI room was designed with soft lighting around the perimeter, using an embracing oval shape. A large wall of a nature scene back-lit photo mural provides a soothing, positive distraction.
From a functional perspective, the MRI equipment was strategically located at the rear of the retail center, allowing easy construction access. The walls were built after the equipment was installed, and the location will allow access for future equipment upgrades. The MRI suite is also adjacent to the Urgent Care Center, accessible via a connecting corridor. This flexibility allows the Urgent Care Center to utilize the MRI suite as needed.
More than a year since opening, clients and users have stated the facility looks new. Many patients have asked to have their imaging needs transferred from other locations to the Breast Imaging Center at Upper Kirby..
