Platte Valley Medical Center
Brighton, Colorado

The Platte Valley Medical Center replacement campus is situated on a 50 acre greenfield site in the Bromley Park development area. The new campus is designed to accommodate a 250 bed hospital and 3 MOBs with required parking spaces. Phase I will consist of a 217,000 sf hospital and a 55,000 sf MOB. The design/planning effort was kicked off with Design University, an exercise in educating the client and the user groups, with the design phases, the tools to be employed, the expected product, as well as the responsibilities and contributions expected of the team members. This was followed by benchmarking tours to several healthcare facilities in the Denver area to identify design/functional issues for consideration going into master planning and design. The next step involved visioning sessions where the design team facilitated a client discussion on an early vision for the project. Information mined from these early steps helped shape the master planning effort which was followed by gaming, leading up to the design worksessions. Particular client requests for the project included that the designers use culturally appropriate materials throughout the project, as well as, simple elegance that encompasses feelings of a warm, welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. The project has proven to be budget driven and cost consciousness is a key factor on a daily basis. Designers integrated exterior and interior materials and early planning which optimized a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains, a design detail that will certainly to speak to the community. The replacement campus is planned to open in early 2007 with a total of 98 beds, including 28 Med/Surg/Peds, 20 Post Partum, 6 LDRs, 8 CCU and 8 Telemetry. Construction costs for the replacement hospital are estimated at approximately $57 million, with an additional $10 million reserved for medical equipment. The project is currently beginning construction.
