Trinity Mother Frances Ornelas Tower & Surgical Expansion
Tyler, Texas

Trinity Mother Frances Health System, a patient-focused healthcare provider, called for their new multi-million dollar, five floor expansion project to be hallmarked not only by a strong and deliberate connection to their existing campus but also by longevity in durability of materials and ease of maintenance. The new surgical facility has eleven surgical suites expanded cardiovascular, orthopedic and neurosurgical capabilities. A laboratory is located on the ground floor; the new Surgery Center on the first floor; The Heart Institute on the third floor and patient rooms on floors four, five and six. The facility also includes a fourth floor rooftop garden and 152 private patient rooms. As the premier provider of heart care in east Texas for more than 20 years, the Trinity Mother Frances Heart Institute offers state-of-the-art technology so patients can receive world-class care. The focus is on prevention and early detection of heart disease to help people enjoy healthier, longer lives. The new Heart Institute increased available heart catheterization labs from the current four to six, and outpatient catheterization unit beds from 14 to 28. Surgery suites have also increased and expanded in the Ornelas Tower. Eleven surgical suites are included in Phase One, with Phase Two adding five additional surgical suites, for a total of 16, with up to 21 surgical suites possible at a later date. The new private patient rooms offer a more comfortable experience for patients and their families. The design of the rooms creates a warm and inviting environment. Designers incorporated a lot of new science into the facility, but also included new healing concepts that provide the patient with a soothing, warm and natural environment. These include a rooftop garden, where a patient can join friends and family while they convalesce. Patient rooms are oversized and will be 300 to 539 square feet. Rooms include dedicated family space for anyone who stays overnight or for extended periods of time with a patient. The new patient rooms also include a computer phone port and a seating area. Convenience and accessibility are enhanced by visual way finding cues such as accent furr downs in the ceiling and accent pattern in the flooring. WHR worked closely with selected user groups consisting of Hospital Administration, Medical Staff, Housekeeping, and Infection Control to review the selection of interior finishes. The process continued by coordinating numerous product mock-ups to ensure uncomplicated maintenance. The completed project showcases a multi-colored woven carpet for its long life and appearance, poured epoxy flooring with cove base for its durability and sanitary properties, and ceramic tile on sterile core walls for its cleanability. During the early phases of construction, the health system began to implement a stronger patient focused care program, as well as a unique challenge to stand apart from their neighboring competitive health facility. The design team and the hospital agreed that corporate branding was the key to successful marketing within the community and within the hospital itself. As a result their corporate color, burgundy, is infused throughout the architectural elements and materials and their logo is proudly displayed on accent walls as well as in their custom cubicle curtain throughout the interiors. This new visualization encouraged TMFHS to look into the future needs of patients and staff as they began a new chapter in healthcare. The finest heart care facility in the region is now one of the finest in the nation, said Michael J. Vintges, vice president, Trinity Mother Frances Heart Institute. The Trinity Mother Frances Heart Institute offers technology that is comparable to major heart treatment centers anywhere in the United States. Our commitment to adding new technology as it becomes available is what keeps us at the forefront of heart treatment in the region.
