The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health
Houston, Texas

The School of Public Health, located in a 10-story, 200,000 square foot building built in 1973, functions as a teaching and research lab facility. WHR provided planning, programming and architectural services for two phases of upgrades to the existing building and the relocation of the Human Genetics Center to the School of Public Health. The first phase, Short Term Upgrades, involved the relocation of existing research programs and upgrades to the HVAC and lab exhaust systems, and redesign of the labs and support spaces. The second phase, Long Term Upgrades, involved the development of long term upgrade strategies for the multi-story laboratory wing. The third phase, Human Genetics Center, involved removing the existing building interior to provide space for new modular biomedical labs, instrument rooms, offices and seminar room. The buildings structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems were upgraded to meet current lab standards and all applicable codes. Part of the success of this project resulted from segregating the wet lab functions from the dry lab functions, thereby reducing the load on existing mechanical equipment.
