Mid Campus Building One
WHR and Vaughn Construction are currently working together on this Design/Build project for the Mid Campus Building One for MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC). The project includes construction services for the construction of one Class A administrative office building located at the southeast corner of South Braeswood Boulevard and the future extension of Bertner Avenue.
The building comprises one 25-story tower, one 18-story tower, and one 3-story meeting center.
This new facility will provide office space for departments currently located on the Main Campus and various lease sites in and around the Texas Medical Center. The new facility is 25 stories totaling approximately 1,414,000 gross square feet of building.
The current scope of the project includes the shell and core of the building and the tenant build out of approximately 280,000 square feet plus the associated site work. The original program called for a 15 to 22 story facility totaling approximately 944,000 gross square feet, including the tenant build out of approximately 502,000 gross square feet.
The first two and half months of the project were spent investigating the placement of the building and future parking garage, establishing the preferred building floor plate and size of the building, Since this facility will act as the gateway to the Mid Campus, it was important that it make a statement. Cost and schedule were major considerations as the WHR / Vaughn Team, along with MDACC, studied various options.
In order to meet schedule milestones a fast track approach to project delivery was developed. Along with the fast track schedule a new approach to obtain Owner input and review was put in place. The new approach facilitated a more integrated exchange on information between the Owner and the Design/Build team.
