Modern Design Brings Healthy Smiles to Dental Program

University of Texas Health Science Center – School of Dentistry

The School of Dentistry was designed with flexibility to accommodate the growth of the School’s programs. The state-of-the-art operatories and simulation labs can accommodate 100 dental medicine and 50 dental hygiene students per class. The new building enables the University to increase class size by 20 percent as well as to increase the number of patient visits. The dental school’s goal is for this facility is to become the best dental school in the world, graduating the best trained dental professionals.

The facility is a six-story, 296,500-square-foot dental education and clinical facility complete with dental clinics, simulation and pre-clinical labs, clinical support labs, a clinical research lab, classrooms, a learning resource center, a student center, and administrative space.

The School of Dentistry is part of the larger UTHSC-H’s Research Park Complex (RPC) a 485,000-gross-square-foot complex consisting of four buildings—the Behavioral and Biomedical Sciences Building, School of Dentistry, University Life Center, and Central Plant—serving three major programs—neurosciences, behavioral and biomedical sciences, and dental research and education. Situated on a seven-and-a-half acre parcel on the corner of the larger 100-acre RPC, the site is master planned to allow for a future research or classroom building, or a parking garage. The buildings are linked via pedestrian connectors to promote interaction and optimal sharing of information and knowledge among the various disciplines. The RPC is intended to appear and operate as a single entity serving as the gateway to the new research campus, and exterior materials set the standard for future campus development. The central plant serves all buildings.
