University of Texas at El Paso
Biosciences Facility
Challenge A new facility was needed to expand the university’s biosciences research capabilities with much-needed laboratories, vivarium, aquarium, ABSL-3 lab and office/support space. A location was chosen for this nearly 100,000 square-foot facility.
Solution
Working in association with Mijares Mora Architects, WHR evaluated the master plan and recommended the location be changed. A new location was designated near existing related buildings, creating an easily commutable “scientific center” on the campus. This location also allowed the facility to tie into the existing utility plant and the design created a platform for simple future expansion of campus utilities.
Results
The university has now dramatically extended its research capabilities and enhanced its ability to deliver on the organization’s mission. The building’s interdisciplinary configuration serves as a logical extension of nearby science buildings and promotes sharing of information between departments .
