The Louis & Peaches Owen Heart Hospital (LPOHH) evolved from years of planning that included benchmarking against the top heart hospitals in the country, to evaluate what would best support the hospital’s vision for the program – becoming the regional leader in cardiac care.
LPOHH, located on the campus of Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler, Texas, opened for patient care in December 2012. Designed by WHR Architects, the new hospital includes 72 new private patient rooms, a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, cardiac surgical suites and comprehensive cardiac, thoracic, vascular and pulmonary services – as well as state-of-the-art equipment, integrated electronic health records and a comprehensive cardiac team and staff. The facility is named after Louis & Peaches Owen, philanthropists whose record donation of $18 million helped to construct the 154,000 square foot facility.
From the onset, the goal for the new facility was to embody world class, yet timeless design through the architecture and interiors. Natural finishes such as wood, glass, metal and stone carry the design theme from the outside in. Longevity was important but the space also needed to be flexible and adaptable for potential new uses. The building was also to have it’s own unique identity, inside and out, yet still architecturally relate to the larger campus. It is cohesively connected in context.
