A New Prototype Community Hospital for Katy

Memorial Hermann - Katy Hospital

As one of the fastest growing suburban communities in the Houston area with substantial demand for healthcare services, Katy, Texas was identified as an ideal location for Memorial Hermann Health System (MHHS) to build a replacement hospital.

Due to limited land availability, WHR Architects worked with system and hospital administration to explore potential incremental replacement scenarios. Initial master plan studies yielded concepts that would require an investment of approximiately $60 million to expand the existing facility. These studies helped the system determine that it did not make sense for large capital investment within outdated facilities.

WHR helped Memorial Hermann develop a "prototype" design. Although the use of a prototype is unusual for a not-for-profit healthcare system, Memorial Hermann planned to build a similar facility in an additional location. The use of the prototype provided a number of benefits, including cost savings in design and construction, as well as establishing a set of best practices for building materials such as lighting, flooring, and finishes.

The hospital Phase 1 development was approximately 307,000 square feet, with 127 beds. It included a healing garden, public concourse, surgery with five operating rooms, an emergency department with 17 treatment rooms, an OB program with seven LDRs, 22 postpartum, four antepartum, 80 private medical/surgery beds, and 12-bed ICU. The Phase II master plan includes a new four-story bed tower, a new MED ICU and Neonatal ICU, Emergancy/Surgery department expansion, and OB expansion.
