Ocean Medical Center - Emergency Department Expansion

In 2009 Ocean Medical Center (OMC), a 281-bed community hospital, began working with WHR to develop a Master Facility Plan through the year 2020. Phase I implementation began in 2010 with a three-story addition that provides space for the relocation and major expansion of the emergency department and shelled space for future diagnostic programs and a 36-bed inpatient unit.

The building is designed to accommodate additional three floors to add a total of 108 new private patient rooms.

Information from the post-occupancy evaluation of OMC’s sister hospital, Jersey Shore University Medical Center (also designed by WHR), was used to inform and improve the unit design at OMC. For example, some spaces—which are shared at Jersey Shore—such as clean and soiled utility rooms, an equipment storage room, and a nourishment room were added to each “neighborhood” making these new units more convenient for the nursing staff.
