Memorial Hermann Signature Suites
Houston, Texas
The recently completed Signature Suites at Memorial Hermann Hospital provide upscale services not typically offered by hospitals. Non-critical care patients and their family members are able to take advantage of hotel-like accommodations with Concierge services that include arrangements for Spa Services, tickets for either sporting events or theater tickets, and elegant meals from local restaurants. The design is inspired by classic forms and detailing with a sleek, modern style. Materials, colors and design elements reference the original Cullen Pavilion.
Included on the 11 suite patient floor is a fully equipped business center and library. In addition, each suite has its own technology center at the patient side, which includes a bedside computer with a 15-inch flat touch screen, virtual keyboard, and a small mounted digital camera. Through the computer, patients can access the Internet, radio stations, local and cable television stations, hospital channels, games, and movies.
The environment is sophisticated, with high attention to detail, and is filled with elegant materials such as etched glass, carpeting and specialty lighting. Fine custom wood cabinetry, drapery, and custom lounge furniture provide comfort and lushness in each suite. Bathrooms feature granite counter tops and limestone floors and walls including custom cabinetry and concealed plumbing for bed pan washers. Table lamps, wall sconces, and other soft lamps offer subtle lighting accents. The color palette is composed of subdued tones selected to inspire calm and tranquility.
Although luxurious, this wing is designed to withstand typical, daily hospital abuse. The corridor walls are imperceptibly protected with high impact wall panels to blend, but also enhance the overall design as an architectural detail. The carpet tile pile height and construction was deliberately selected to accommodate daily stretcher and rolling cart traffic. The acoustical lay-in ceiling tiles were selected for their high noise reduction coefficient as well as semi-concealed grid, smooth surface to resist dust accumulation as well as for aesthetics.
Warm glowing soft lighting was desired to promote a soothing environment as well as an element of sparkle in the decorative surface mounted pendants and genuine alabaster wall sconces. The millwork in high abuse areas such as the nurse station and headwalls received wood grain plastic laminate. However, the Library and Patient Suite sitting rooms are designed with richly stained medium figured anigre.
The highly designed floor base throughout the project resembles intricately milled wood base but is in fact an impact resistant resilient rubber base. The ancient X motif, (a symbol often used in ancient Rome) is visible throughout Hermann Pavilion in its lighting fixtures and directional signage. This motif is subtlety carried throughout the Signature Suites design, reflected in the carpet design as well as in the custom designed furniture.
Patients have access to a private entrance for check in on the suite floor instead of at the admission desk. These luxurious suites fill a need for patients that desire a unique, a-typical hospital experience.
