William Beaumont Hospital
Royal Oak, Michigan
WHR lead an effort to establish patient and family centered-care as the guiding principals of care at William Beaumont Hospital located outside of Detroit, Michigan. The medical staff at William Beaumont includes more than 2,200 physicians representing more than 90 medical and surgical specialties. The hospital has received numerous high ranking from national publications and organizations.
In an update to the masterplan, WHR in association with Harley Ellis and HOK, mapped out the plan for a 656,000 square foot addition that will replace beds in the original hospital with state-of-the-art facilities. The new 432-bed, eight-level South Tower will enhance quality and efficiency of care with high-tech operating rooms, additional private inpatient rooms and decentralized nursing stations bringing nurses closer to their patients.
The tower features spacious rooms with enhanced patient privacy, accommodations to encourage family involvement in patient care and decentralized nursing stations to enhance patient access to nurses. Patient rooms are clustered around a team care station where medical staff will gather to discuss and plan patient care with each other and with family members. Family pantries and consultation rooms promote family involvement in care.
Decentralized nursing stations or pods, located right outside patient rooms, keep nurses closer to their patients. A nurse call system utilizing low-frequency cell phones provides patients with instant access to their caregivers. All rooms have views to the outside or an interior atrium garden that features maple trees and plantings native to Michigan.
