Harbor Hospital Center
Baltimore, Maryland

WHR has been involved at Harbor for several years, originally through a master plan. The hospitals reputation had been mediocre, the staff had low morale, and the facilities were drab and typically institutional. Following a Creed Project to find their values, the design team worked to create a successful turnaround at Harbor. Working with former Planetree executive director, Robin Orr, the physical changes included renovation of several units to create family-centered environments that came on line every six months for two years. Renovation included decentralized nursing models signaled a shift in emphasis. The decentralized delivery model allows caregivers to be closer to the patient, provision for education on the units, provision for family participation in the care process, and attention to the needs of staff. Subtle changes included breaking down the institutional grid, addition of carpet, indirect lighting, artwork and hand crafted signage. Aquariums, libraries and family kitchens are included on each unit. Physical design coordinated with a major change into the philosophy of care provided an exceptional impact. To date, we have provided renovation design services for Pulmonary/Renal, Telemetry, Oncology and Womens Center. The Womens and Infants floor replaces a traditional labor and delivery with an LDRP model of single room maternity care. The Special Care Nursery incorporates a nautical theme with sail motifs intended to provide a sense of privacy or a safe harbor for the babies. The special care waiting area provides a non-threatening, interactive environment, which continues the nautical theme.
