Valley View Medical Center
Cedar City, Utah

The 94,340 SF hospital and 18,150 SF clinic is on a 20-acre site that offers planned growth zones for all major services and the ability to double the size of the facility over time without significant disruption. In order to afford the major capital expense of replacement, Intermountain Health Care put many challenges before the design team. A major concept of the project was to shift from the old paradigm of a hospital to an ambulatory-dominant campus with integrated physician practices. A redesigned organization was planned to streamline the provision of hospital services in coordination with the robust ambulatory model. 12 departments in the new building replaced 35 in the original building. The design relies on system benefits and opportunities by working with another IHC hospital 50 miles away to combine many materials management, linen and food service functions. As a result, Valley View was able to build more clinical space and less logistical support space. The patient units feature all private rooms and decentralized nursing closer to the bedside. Labor saving computerization and step-saving locations of medications and supplies give the staff an ability to do more with less. Major innovations occurred in the diagnostic and treatment areas where departments were consolidated. A streamlined multi-modality procedure center is capable of surgery, endoscopy and other procedures that share staff, space and a single prep and recovery process. A major multi-modality diagnostic center replaces several departments, offers one-stop testing for routine diagnostics and offers additional capacity to the adjacent emergency department in off hours. The integrated physician space is directly joined to the diagnostic and procedure centers, sharing a common concourse that is convenient for outpatients and referrals. The client challenged the team to meet contemporary standards for the size of patient rooms and the spaces required for todays technology. The new hospital provides 40% more space than the building it replaces, but IHC challenged the architects to achieve it with the lowest possible net to gross ratio. The result is exceptional value for every construction dollar in the projects $23.8 million budget.
