Memorial Hermann Hospital - Hermann Pavilion
Houston, Texas

WHR developed a master campus facility plan for Memorial Hermann Hospital in 1995 that established a continuum of non-disruptive facility renewal and addressed immediate facility issues with regulatory and accreditation agencies. The plan preserved flexibility to accommodate unpredictable future needs on the limited Texas Medical Center urban site. The long-range plan established a core atrium and lobby connecting all buildings and established a circulation spine across the entire campus to connect parking and the professional building. This plan ensured an available building site each time a replacement was necessary. After completion of a master plan, WHR was selected to provide design services for the 14-story, 750,000 square foot patient tower. The facility is designed to accommodate changes in health care delivery. For patient convenience, the building design focuses on outpatient services on the first two floors. Included in this space is a new emergency and trauma center, imaging center, expanded inpatient and outpatient surgery and observation beds, and an education center. New intensive care units for trauma and other surgery patients are provided, as is a large suite of cath labs and the George Bush Heart Center. The upper floors hold obstetrics, neonatal intensive care and pediatrics. In 2001 this campus flooded during tropical storm Alison filling the lower two floors of each building with water. The plan developed in 1995 was utilized as a framework to develop a strategic flood recovery plan and utilizes the next building site to replace critical services for the campus. The current work has updated the 1995 master campus facility plan with new information. MHHS has been a long-time repeat client for WHR. The pinwheel renewal plan allowed for continuous replacements on a limited urban site.
