In response to space deficiencies and aging, existing facilities, Stamford Hospital and WHR’s medical planning team developed a 2007 Master Plan for growth, which indicated a need for a 30-acre site for a new hospital facility. When the search for alternatives failed to identify a suitable site, the Hospital decided to expand the current site with additional acreage to accommodate growth and renewal.
From the beginning of this project, the Hospital and design team worked with the larger community to guide the transition from a traditional hospital with an aging infrastructure to a state-of-the-art facility with links to two parks and a revitalized neighborhood. At the heart of the park-like campus will be a new, 11-story, 647,000-square-foot specialty healthcare building that incorporates the latest advancements in facility design and medical technology.
The new hospital will house a 43,800-square-foot emergency department (ED) designed to support 65,000 visits annually. The ED will consist of 40 treatment areas: two triage rooms, six fast-track rooms, 16 urgent care rooms, eight dedicated pediatric rooms, four trauma (including one room fit-out to support pediatrics), and four cardiac rooms. The ED is designed to flex up and down to support operations between pediatrics and urgent care. Additionally the ED has been designed to include two general radiology rooms and one CT, solely dedicated to the ED. The ED also has a four-bay behavioral health holding area and a detox room.
The new hospital wing also incorporates the Heart & Vascular Institute’s centralized location for invasive and non-invasive heart services, surgical suites with 10 high-tech operating rooms, and an intensive care unit expansion from 16 to 24 beds, emphasizing a commitment to critical care and tertiary services. The seven floors in the patient tower will feature 180 all-private rooms with decentralized nursing units (3 for 36 beds) for more flexible delivery of patient care. All patient rooms will feature private baths and showers.
