Spa-like Environment for Healthcare

Houston Methodist - Breast Imaging Center Upper Kirby

Answering a key need for patient services within a neighborhood setting, Houston Methodist and WHR Architects partnered to build the Breast Imaging Center Upper Kirby. WHR worked ardently to achieve the client’s immediate goal - to create the meditative yet private characteristics of a spa while boasting the latest medical technology.

From the onset, WHR’s design team was able to address these wishes by creating a low-stress, safe and comfortable environment which helped make treatment a more therapeutic experience. Natural daylight shines through much of the building, providing natural illumination for visitors. Film used on the glass helps reduce heat gain, minimizes glare, and assists in providing privacy for the patients. Indoor air quality was enhanced by using many sustainable products. Low VOC paints and adhesives, PVC-free wall protection, and rubber flooring create a healthful environment. Renewable materials such as bamboo veneer ceilings, recycled content carpet and fabrics, and resin panels continued the holistic healing feel of the space.

Privacy was also a major factor considered during the planning process. To control access, a closed vestibule was designed at the entrance, but welcoming, comfortable materials were also utilized in this space. Room placement was also highly considered, placing the MRI suite adjacent to the public waiting area so patients receiving MRIs could be routed directly to the imaging suite, without passing other patients.
