Houston, TX — WHR Architects, Inc. (WHR) has been honored with the 2009 International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Design Excellence Award in Healthcare for the Texas/Oklahoma Region. The program, which recognizes the highest quality and achievement in interior design, honoring the creativity and innovation of the best of Texas and Oklahoma designers, gave its top honor in the healthcare category to WHR’s design of The Methodist Hospital Kirby Breast Imaging Center in Houston, Texas.
Comments from the three person panel of national recognized designers cited WHR’s healthcare facility as the "best imaging center we have ever seen," additionally proclaiming it as "a shining star." The Kirby Breast Imaging Center is designed to provide the patients with the resources for the detection and treatment of breast cancer. Located off-campus in a retail center, the 7,300 square foot outpatient center is the first of several planned “neighborhood” centers that would bring the care closer to patients.
“Creating a prototypical, state-of-the-art imaging center with a warm and welcoming appeal was a primary goal of our team,” notes Gail Sterling, Director of Interior Design. Awareness of breast cancer patients’ needs was critical to the design of the center. Designers focused on patients’ desire for have a low-stress, safe and secure, yet comfortable environment that would make a treatment a therapeutic experience.
