Funded by a donation from Edward H. Harte, the university endeavored to create a groundbreaking new research facility focused on marine science related to the Texas Gulf Coast.
Working in association with Richter Architects, WHR designed a stunning 56,000 square-foot facility that includes research and teaching laboratories, classrooms, seminar room, conference facility and education outreach center. Inspired by the facility’s intended purpose, the design is an unexpected hybrid of the technical and the natural.
Glass, stainless steel and brick envelop the scientific spaces in serious, clean structure, while the same materials are used in flowing waves around the common areas to invoke the organic elements of the center’s mission. The building cuts a striking profile while simultaneously feeling perfectly in place along the shores of Corpus Christi Bay
