Much of the Fellowship is absorbing expertise from several mentors in and outside the firm walls. An opportunity to help Lia Rodi (1998-1999 Tradewell Fellow) and Steve Maynard (Sustainable Design Coordinator) with the Sustainable Design Initiative (SDI) in creating presentations for upcoming conferences was more than intriguing. Not only was I able to work with another past Tradewell, but also get to know another side of WHR! One presentation included a discussion of the internal WHR Sustainability Rating Label© for interior finishes and products. I learned that since the birth of LEED© and the push for green building, several manufacturers have claimed to have green practices when they really do not. “Green Washing” is a major issue in the construction industry, mainly caused by a lack of third-party certification requirements.

Recently, Diana and I have been put to the task of analyzing critical care units for a continuous WHR research study.  I find this sort of work quite interesting; especially how the information gathered can be extremely useful in developing a new project’s space program. WHR is one of few firms in the United States dedicated to research, and is one reason I wanted to join the team.
