“What did you learn today?” – A question that a dear mentor regularly asks me. He says that if you aren’t learning, then you aren’t taking the time to reflect enough, or you are in the wrong place. It has been six months since I have started as the 2009-2010 Tradewell Fellow at WHR, and I wish to take this month to list short ‘blurbs’, if you will, that describe some of the things I have learned so far.
It is important to become more aware of yourself and the way that you work around other people.
Understanding your own means and methods of solving a problem may bring insight onto others’ methods.
Architecture is not only about doing well at architecture – it is about creating positive, trusting, reliable partnerships with your colleagues and clients.
The best projects can be born only with the synergistic input of several layers of expertise.
Communication is essential to the success of a team. Having the ability to speak another’s “language” is a rare and unique talent. For example, an architect cannot expect a restaurant owner to understand the architectural language, but can be challenged to communicate architectural ideas with restaurant-owner language.
Marketing sometimes requires the ability to place oneself in the shoes of another. As a graduating senior of college this year, where would I find out about alternative career paths?
Sometimes challenging tasks are there so that you learn something about yourself as a professional or as a person.
It is a small world – and the architectural world is smaller – and the healthcare architectural world is even smaller.
Leadership is about being inspirational, a great motivator, and helping create synergistic relationships between team members to reach a common goal or vision.
