Every year, the current Fellow is granted a scholarship to attend a National conference of their choice. I decided to attend Healthcare Design 2009 in Orlando, Florida. Healthcare Design is one of the largest healthcare design conferences. This year’s five-day conference brought over 2900 professionals, representing 29 countries, and three keynote speakers: Michael Graves, Blair Sadler and Christine Malcolm. Having an opportunity to participate in a workshop, a hospital tour, and help with a student design Charrette is invaluable experience as a young professional. I also attended nine educational sessions which broadened my knowledge on various topics including designing for staff, evidence-based design, and impact of design on elders. Networking with other professionals, especially outside of architecture, is one of the main elements of conferences like Healthcare Design. I was able to meet several people, including some from Berlin, Ontario, Italy, United Kingdom, Sweden, and a variety of United States cities.
