Charles Griffin, another senior principal at WHR, asked me to prepare a presentation about what structural engineers need to know about healthcare planning and design. It presented a challenge for me, having only basic knowledge of structural decision-making and being new to healthcare architecture. This task’s benefits are five-fold: one, to become more familiar with structural engineering, so we can better communicate and collaborate with structural consultants; two, to broaden my knowledge of healthcare architecture, planning and design; three, to dive into the previous projects of WHR and seek lessons learned; four, to better my presentation skills; and five, better the collaborative efforts in the architectural community.

I was fortunate enough to attend a client meeting this month, to present the master plan and initial pricing of a hospital expansion. Besides the WHR team, other critical team members were present: the hospital CEO, CFO, Director of Plant Services, Department representatives; MEP consultants; contractors (for pricing); and another architect in charge of the medical office building massing studies. During the preparation for this meeting, communication and collaboration with a programming consultant, structural consultant and elevator consultants were necessary.
